Easter vacation is the perfect opportunity to escape from the routine, and make a getaway as a couple, with friends or family. From Sitges Group Apartments we encourage you to come and experience this special time in Sitges.
Spending the Easter break in Sitges is a great opportunity to discover this little jewel of the Costa Dorada. Its location just 30 minutes from Barcelona, its beautiful beaches with crystal clear water and the perfect balance between tranquility and leisure, beach and city, and gastronomy and sports make the city become a great attraction during this time. Also, you can enjoy both the first baths of the year and the first terraces, where you can’t miss the tapas and the typical gastronomy of the Mediterranean diet.
Easter Week 2023 will be from April 2 to 10, a few days in which getting accommodation without prior reservation can be complicated, so we recommend you to book in advance.
Sitges combines its typical Mediterranean white and blue tones with liturgical colors during the events prepared for the occasion. The blessing of the palms and palmones on Palm Sunday kicks off the different activities that will take place during Passion Week. Below, we inform you about the program of events planned for this Holy Week in Sitges:
As we were saying, Palm Sunday is officially the day on which Holy Week begins. A perfect occasion for people of all ages to get up early to enjoy the good weather and a day whose protagonists are the palms and branches, which will be blessed in different parts of the town. The blessing begins at 10:45 AM in the Church of Sant Joan, followed by a procession and a mass. Christian tradition dictates that the godparents are the ones who give their godchildren a palm tree.
From Monday 3 to Wednesday 5 we can enjoy the Exhibition of the Holy Sepulchre of the Pasos de Semana Santa 2023 from 5 PM to 9:30 PM at the Agrupació de Balls Populars (Palau del Rei Moro, C/ d'en Bosc, 10).
During Maundy Thursday, the churches will have special masses throughout the day, and also the Liturgical Prayer of Lauds (11 AM), the Mass of the Lord's Supper (7 PM - Parish Church) and the Mass of the Lord's Supper (8 PM - Church of Sant Joan) will be presented.
On Good Friday early in the morning (8 AM), the Way of the Cross will take place, from the Hermitage of Sant Sebastià to the Parish Church. Again, the churches will have special masses throughout the day, and will continue with the Exhibition of Easter Steps and the Procession of Silence at 10 PM.
During Holy Saturday there will be the Celebration of Easter Eve in the Parish Church at 10:30 PM, and before and after there will be caramelles (Catalan folk songs sung at Easter) in the Town Hall Square. On Sunday, there will be Easter Masses at the usual times on this day. However, this weekend can also serve us to stroll through the streets of the town and enjoy the quiet atmosphere and sunny weather that characterizes Sitges at this time of year.
A mass with singing of goigs (praises) and caramelles will be held at 11 AM at the Sanctuary of the Mare de Déu del Vinyet.
In Catalonia, Easter Monday is a public holiday, better known as the “Day of the Mona”, one of the most deeply rooted traditions of the Catalan Easter Week. On this day, families get together and enjoy the mona de Pascua, a traditional dessert. The most typical is usually made of brioche, rounded and topped with hard-boiled eggs, or the classic chocolate figures. It’s a tradition that the godfather or godmother is the one who gives the mona to the children.
If during this day you are still celebrating your vacations, we encourage you to prepare a good meal in your apartment and book in advance this sweet in a local bakery. Happy Easter!
