More than just a beach destination, Sitges is a city deeply rooted in art and culture. Since the late 19th century, when it became a hub of the Modernist movement, attracting artists and intellectuals. Today, it continues to embody this creative spirit, thanks to its vibrant cultural scene, which includes not only the Sitges Film Festival - International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, but also its diverse array of art exhibitions. In this post, we recommend the best museums, art galleries and creative spots to visit in Sitges.
Museu del Cau Ferrat
Founded in 1893 by the writer and artist Santiago Rusiñol as a home-studio for his creative work, Cau Ferrat and its gatherings became a bohemian haven within the Catalan Modernist movement. In 1933, it was established as an art museum, exhibiting Rusiñol’s collection of antique art, as well as his own works and those of his contemporaries. Located in the heart of the historic district, the museum offers a journey into the artistic and creative life of the early 20th century.
Maricel art complex
This monumental complex, located right next to the Cau Ferrat Museum, comprises two of Sitges’ most important museums: the Maricel Museum and the Palau de Maricel, also known as the Palau de Terra. The Maricel Museum’s art collection offers a comprehensive overview of art history from the 10th to the 20th century. Meanwhile, the Palau de Maricel allows visitors to admire the beauty of the Modernist buildings and halls, with a panoramic view of the Mediterranean.
Stämpfli Foundation
One of Catalonia’s most significant collections of contemporary art is located in Sitges’ Town Hall Square. Conceived by the artist couple Stämpfli, this art gallery brings together more than 90 works by prominent contemporary artists on the international scene, including several pieces by Peter Stämpfli, the foundation’s founder.
Agora 3
This charming art gallery, located along the boardwalk, showcases works by artists from the Catalan region, ranging from artists based in Sitges to tributes to major figures of the country’s avant-garde movements, such as Pere Pruna and Ángeles Santos.
Sitges’s old town is a work of art in itself, with its narrow streets and the grand mansions of the Indianos, making it perfect for an architectural tour. Plus, spots like Carrer d’en Bosch and the Corraló de la Rectoria still feature medieval cobblestones and transport you back to Sitges’s historic past.
