The Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia is the most important film festival specialized in fantasy and horror movies. A unique event for movie lovers, where you can enjoy performances, premieres, conferences, exhibitions and a lot of proposals related to the audiovisual industry.
Since 1968 its consolidated trajectory has made it as a cinematographic reference on new trends, technology and creativity. The presence of some of the best directors, actors and producers is the proof of its status. Sir Anthony Hopkins, Quentin Tarantino, Terry Gilliam, John Landis, Guillermo del Toro or Takashi Miike are just some of the names that have walked through the festival.
The Sitges Film Festival takes place the first weeks of October, and this year the dates are from October 7th to 16th.
During a week, the different areas of the city of Sitges host multiple projections, marathons, forums, exhibitions, concerts and activities organized by the festival.
Last years the festival chooses a special theme topic, which is the protagonist of its posters and special programs. On several occasions it has been a movie tribute. Some of them have been 'Alien' in 2009, 'The Shining' in 2010, the interpretation of dreams in 2014 or 'Se7en' in 2015.
The Star Trek saga is the leitmotiv of this 49th edition. The festival commemorates Star Trek's 50th anniversary and the proof is the Sitges 2016 poster in which the design places Sitges in space. All the fans of the trekkie galaxy have an unmissable date to enjoy screenings, activities and various meetings of this true cult phenomenon.
The most popular section is Oficial Fantàstic, the official division of the festival. There, all the films compete for the Premios María (the award of Sitges by an international jury) in different categories: 'Best Film', 'Best Director', 'Best Screenplay', 'Best Picture' or 'Best Visual Effects', among many others.
Some of the films competing this year are: '31' (Rob Zombie), 'Before I Wake' (Mike Flanagan), 'Creepy' (Kiyoshi Kurosawa), 'Desierto' (Jonás Cuarón), 'Dog Eat Dog' (Paul Schrader), 'Pet' (Carles Torrens), 'Proyecto Lázaro' (Mateo Gil), 'Psycho Raman' (Anurag Kashyap), 'Tenemos la carne' (Emiliano Rocha Minter), 'Terraformars' (Takashi Miike), 'The Girl with All the Gifts' (Colm McCarthy), 'The Neon Demon' (Nicolas Winding Refn) and 'Train to Busan' (Yeon Sang-ho).
The festival also have other awards for section. This year the sections for which the films are classified are Midnight X-Treme (horror movies), Noves Visions, Òrbita, Panorama Documenta, Panorama Fantàstic and Sitges Clásicos – Red Planet Marx (tribute to classic cinema).
Furthermore, the festival rewards several honorary awards in recognition of a film career consolidated. This year the organization has confirmed that the Màquina del Temps award will be to Bruce Campbell, Paul Schrader, Walter Koenig and Barbara Crampton; the Gran Premio Honorífico will be awarded to the veteran Max von Sydow and Dolph Lundgren will be recognized with the María Honorífica award.
Although the sentimental award for excellence is the Gran Premi del Públic rewarded by the public of Sitges to the films of the official section.
